Harrisburg, PA -- August 1, 2024 – On July 26, Cordier Auctions held their online Art of the American Indian Auction. This 30-year-old single-owner collection contained an incredible amount of diversity and offered collectors a small sampling from just about every indigenous region of North America. Cordier is proud to announce the success of this auction which drew in buyers from California to New York City to Alaska and abroad. Several notable items stand out amongst the collection.
From the Inuit & Pacific Northwest collection, a fabulous contemporary carving of a Spirit Bird figure by Kiugak (Kaiwak) Ashoona brought $1,984. Two early Haida Halibut fishing hooks hammered at $1,240. This portion of the collection also included carved masks, scrapers, miniatures, and spear point heads.
Of note from the basket collection, an unusual 20th Century mission style woven basket with a lion mirroring the English Royal Arms brought $1,612. Others included California tribal basket hats, standing sewing baskets, and two substantially large Apache works.
The beadwork collection included a pair of leggings and a pipe bag with beautiful Lakota Sioux green, red, and white beading hammering at $1,054. Four beaded Plains Indian fetishes, with two including the umbilical slits in the back realized $868. Other beadwork provided collectors a taste of Iroquois pillows and lazy stitching.
From the American Southwest selection, a beautiful genre scene of Taos Pueblo by Albert Lujan brought $1,240. This painting is amongst the top lots for Lujan’s work. Also included, two early 20th century Navajo sterling & turquoise pieces brought $1,178. A small and very fine Blue Corn (San Ildefonso, 1921-1999) Blackware pot hammered at $1,054. One lot contained two small blackware pots by Maria Martinez, Adam Martinez, and Santana Martinez – the biggest names amongst the Pueblo Pottery tradition – and realized $992. Both were quite impressive numbers considering the pots’ small curio cabinet size.
Erika Kelly, President of Cordier Auctions, said “We were thrilled to offer this collection and are proud to announce the success of the auction, which highlighted the exceptional diversity and rich heritage of the American Indian people. The enthusiastic participation from collectors coast-to-coast and beyond underscores the enduring value of these incredible pieces. It was our pleasure to facilitate such a meaningful exchange between collectors. I am extremely grateful for the passion of Jane Seibert, our Consignment Manager, who managed this project seamlessly from start to finish!”
